North Break Wave

NorthBreak Port Douglas is a next generation resort development set to redefine tourism in Far North Queensland.

Nestled between the Captain Cook Highway and the Great Barrier Reef, NorthBreak is situated at the northern end of the new Wangetti eco tourism trail and is less than 10km to the center of Port Douglas.

The Proposal

With a 300m wave pool at its heart, the development will bring a fresh element to the Tropical region, and a new avenue to introduce Australia’s beloved surf culture into the area by providing surf-able waves year round.

Principles and Ethos

Taking inspiration from the ethos of the modern surfer, the underlying principle of the design reflects the surfing community’s deep respect for nature, conservation and communion with others. NorthBreak’s design embodies a relaxed lifestyle whilst embracing modern day technology.

Environmental Impact

Motivated by environmental considerations NorthBreak targets self sustainability by taking advantage of the areas abundant natural resources, including taking advantage of over 2m of annual rainfall, by stormwater harvesting.

The recovery of waste water will provide for the water demands of the extensive landscaping that surrounds the energy efficient buildings. Solar panels and innovative energy storage will capitalise on the regions high number of sunny days annually.

Over 40% of the entire site will be revegetated and restored to its natural state, and helping to mitigate the current sediment runoff into one of North Queensland s most pristine waterways.

Economic and cultural Benefits

The 300 million dollar project will be a major economic boost to FNQ and the community of Port Douglas and is expected to create the equivalent of another 700 full-time jobs during construction and first year of operation.

The open space and natural amphitheatres created as part of the design provides a world class backdrop for major local and international surfing and sport competitions, along with the ability to host events and festivities in the arts and entertainment world.

Wave Pool provided by Endless Surf

Partnership

WhiteWater West’s Endless Surf and NorthBreak Port Douglas is a perfect partnership to provide surfable waves to the FNQ community.

A natural organic shape with minimal soil and underground disturbance, a third less concrete requirements of wave pools of similar footprint, along with being the most energy efficiency, the choice is clear.

Along with Whitewater West’s proven pedigree of creating over 5,000 aquatic experiences globally over the past 40 years, it’s easy to see the ES4800 Wave Pool is the standout option for NorthBreak.

Technology

With the ability to generate a wave every 8 to 12 seconds, ride lengths for surfers can last up to 26 seconds.

The wave pool’s Software enables the precision to control the angle and speed of every wave generated. From A-frames to air sections to hollow barrels, from 2’ to 7’, no wave has to be same.

It can even be preloaded with specific wave types that mimic those experienced at world-class surf breaks.

World Class Hotel

Guests will be greeted in the open-air lobby by casually dressed staff echoing the surfer lifestyle. By utilising the latest digital check-in technology guests will not need to visit a conventional reception desk. They will be met by staff in a relaxed atmosphere, advised of the amenities and features of the Resort and then guided to their suite.

The Resort will offer a range of room types catering to wide spectrum of demographics and tastes. State of the art software enables guests to use their own ‘smart’ device as the room key, or to order room service, book a restaurant for dinner, book a surf lesson, as well as expedite checkout at the end of their stay.

Restaurant

The resort Restaurant is located with a view over the 5-acre Lagoon, and accessed  from the open Lobby. Adjacent to the Lobby Lounge the Cocktail Bar services the Lounge, Restaurant, Alfresco dining and pool surrounds.

Or if you prefer, secure your own private Cabana for a day, with a perfect view of the wave pool. As little as a private sun shelter for 2 or a fully serviced pool house for 8, with your own iced chiller for your favourite beverages.

Spa and Wellness Centre

A Spa and Wellness centre is located on Level One and will offer a range of modalities and facilities offering couples’ treatment suites, Hamman, Spa baths, chill out spaces, spa food offerings and comfortable amenities and change areas.

The Spa is complemented by a Gym with a view. Pilates, Yoga and other group activities will be support by outdoor facilities for physical wellbeing including “ Jungle Gyms”, boot camps, hiking and mountain bike trails and of course water based activities

Conference and Function rooms

Conference and function rooms are on level 2, as well as a comprehensive Virtual Business Centre - why work from home when you can work from holiday?

The numerous decks and open spaces and surrounding gardens are designed to have alternative capabilities for functions and are ideal for other activities including weddings, birthday celebrations and corporate speciality events.

Beach Club

For those watching the action in the waves, the Beach Club provides a large deck area and circular bar floating amongst the outdoor lounge area. The Beach Club Bar will be the hangout, and will provide those ice cold refreshments to those putting in another hard day on the sun-lounges, Cabanas or VIP Lounges that overlook the wave pool.

Design

By drawing on its 30 year history of creating some of the largest and most iconic Queensland resorts and community Masterplans, locally residing Hunt Design is the creative genius behind NorthBreak Port Douglas, describing it as a “an evolution of tropical vernacular style”. Characterised by simple shapes, broad verandahs over timber decks, great cross ventilation and protection from sun and rain these buildings complement the bare foot chic ambience of the environs.

Limited Real Estate Opportunities

The future possibility of ownership in NorthBreak Port Douglas exists for some to take ownership of their dream holiday ‘home away from home’. Maybe a lagoon front getaway with your own beach access to the 5 acre lagoon, for your sunset SUP sessions.

Or else a lush two level villa, with the same lagoon lapping up against your barbecue pavilion, beckoning you to some early morning laps. With the options of keeping for your exclusive holiday use, or maybe putting into the hotel management rental pool, the choice can be entirely yours.

FAQs

Generating a wave is energy hungry. Is that environmentally palatable?

At NorthBreak we are targeting 100% self-sustainability.

We intend to use the benefits provided by our tropical location and take advantage of the fact the sun is ‘high’ in the sky for most of the year.

With solar panels onsite and innovative energy storage applications, supplemented with top-up power sourced from green energy, will minimise our carbon footprint. The technology selected for the wave pool allows for custom settings to minimise energy consumption.

Are you draining vital community resources by building a wave pool?

Port Douglas has an annual rainfall of over 2m per annum, and the collection of stormwater runoff on site is more than enough to account for water loss from the wave pool and lagoons.

All of that storm water will be processed and purified onsite using ‘green’ energy, and stored for future lagoon and pool top-ups. Any wastewater generated on site will also be purified and used for watering of landscaped and revegetated areas which cover 40 % of the site.

Who is behind the NorthBreak Port Douglas Proposal?

David Imgraben, the Director of NorthBreak Developments Pty Ltd, has been a long term local and businessman in Port Douglas since arriving in 1987.

Another long term local, Gary Hunt from Hunt Design, has engaged the very best team of local master planners, architects, engineers, eco scientists, zoologists, botanists, town planners and economists to turn the vision into reality.

Highly experienced project and construction managers have been retained, and coupled with industry leading hotel consultants, means that we have the right team to deliver a stunning new tourism attraction to the region.

Why build a wave pool?

Wave pools are a global phenomenon right now. The sport of surfing is growing massively.

In 2014, video emerged of Kelly Slater carving up a 2 meter high wave at his new ‘Surf Ranch’, located inland 100 miles from the ocean. This was the catalyst for a major boom in creating the best artificial waves. The ability to create waves on demand, and be in control of wave height, shape and frequency opens up all sorts of opportunities.

We believe that there has been a need for a new tourist attraction or activity in Port Douglas to complement the Reef and Rainforest which have been the primary attractants.

Something that won’t take from the mouths of existing operators, but rather a new reason to visit the Village and actually complement the current tourism industry .

Something that will be an attraction during our northern summer, to boost tourism when it traditionally dwindles in our hot and wet months, when the beaches can’t be used for water activities due to marine stingers.

Currently there are no recognised surf breaks in tropical Australia.

The ability to surf all year round in board shorts or bikini will be a compelling reason to visit NorthBreak Port Douglas. Interestingly here are more recreational surfers in Australia than players in all football codes put together.

In 2019, almost 2 million Aussies traveled to Bali, and many of those would have been escaping our Aussie winter with a desire to surf in boardies or bikini’s.

Soon they will have an opportunity to do just that at Northbreak Port Douglas.

Is this the best location for a wave pool in the area?

After analysing many alternative locations the expert consultancy team selected a degraded cane farm on the southern side of the Mowbray River between the Captain Cook Highway and the coast.

It is outside the future urban expansion plan for Port Douglas, and therefore will not be disturbing future or current local residents, as a result of light or noise pollution from functions or evening surf sessions. Furthermore this location will not generate any increased traffic or bus activity in quiet residential areas.

Importantly, the location will complement the Northern end of the Wangetti Trail, appealing to mountain bikers and hikers seeking that “adventure“ tourism experience.

And when we will be able to go for a surf?

The planning application has been submitted to the approval authorities and is currently under assessment.

Depending upon how long is required for this process, and the outcomes of the authority’s studies, will determine when we can start on site.  We are hopeful for a start in the last quarter of this year with first waves rolling later in 2022.
